There is a broad range of engineers and scientists around the world who have studied tire dynamics in all situations, and every single motorcycle tire they have designed has a radiused tread profile. No matter whether the engineer is Italian, Japanese, American, Korean, French, British, Canadian or Chinese. They all come to the same shape because it is the safest and most maneuverable on a motorcycle. I too know of the poor handling of a worn rear tire and how much more nimble my 600 pound bike feels with new tires. No car tires for me, except on my car.

On that 5-7 year life, it also depends on sun/weather exposure. Tires stored in a garage or warehouse without exposure can last far longer.

First time I put air in a motorcycle tire, (it didn’t have the ability to set the desired pressure) I took it from 150 to way over 200 in the span of a few seconds. I was aiming for 175.
I’m gonna check out that pump.

I had very bad experience with Pirellis, service and tires (motorcycle and car). Stay away from them…

If your not wearing out a tire every two or three years, your definitely not riding enough. I have six bikes and I have to buy 2 or 3 tires every year.

I agree with everything you said it is a touchy subject with the black side crowd and the helmets kill people and seatbelts kill folks. I have run a plugged tire all year it was only on the road an hour when it got punctured in center of tire. I did check it daily and never lost any air and would hit with the soap solution the first two days.

Last year I purchased a Yamaha Vstar 1300. When purchased I did NOT know it was dark sided. I have ridden over 33,000 miles now. I have had to replace the front tire three times. The rear tire which is DARK SIDED still has good tread. I am 68 years old on a limited income frequently driving cross country visiting family. I have met many Gold Wing riders that are DOUBLE DARK SIDED. It is NOT the cost of the tires as much as it is the cost of installation.

Plugging a motorcycle tire is illegal in California. I’m guessing for safety but I believe it should be okay to plug.

How does someone know how accurate the tire gauge they are using is? I have asked tire manufacture reps how they verify the accuracy of the gauge they are using. The responses were not very consistent . Would like to hear your comments on this.

Excellent and informative video as always Kevin. I’ve had to plug a tire twice in my riding career but I always felt better when I patched the inside. As you said though, never try to repair if the hole is near the sidewall. Thanks!

I love the fact that we all think we know how to “improve” our bikes with bigger, fatter, more v-shaped or even square tyres. Companies like Yamaha, Honda or BMW spent billions developing tyres in partnership with tyre manufacturers so the the bikes handle perfectly. Some models have a tyre 10mm wider than the previous model to increase stability or 10mm narrower to improve handling. That’s the kind of detail manufacturers have researched. Then we come along and go “I reckon it needs a 200 on the back!”

#1 Reason I don’t dark side, car tires look ugly as sin on motorcycles. Those garish treads, that horrendous flat tire, all so ugly on what are supposed to be beautiful sleek machines. Nah man, keep them beautiful round tires on my baby all day.

One thing that confuses a lot of people is that they go from an old flat profile tire back to a new round profile tire and it just turns a lot easier than what they think will happen. New round is good handling, Old flat handles poorly.

It’s hard for a non-American to believe that it is not illegal to fit a car tire to a motorcycle. Don’t you have uniform road safety laws that cover this? I know Europe is over legislated if anything, but gee, there’s no way such a simple thing would ever be permissible and the police would pull you over pronto and very likely impound your motorcycle.

Here in the UK it’s illegal to use car tyres on a bike too true they are not as flexible as bike tyres i tried them once on my goldwing and it did skip on corners às we dont have many straight roads around here

I have to think that alot of dark-siders just ride slow and in straight lines. The bead is also very different on a motorcycle vs. Car rims. I guess there is a reason why they call it the dark-side.

Thanks for the video. I agreed with everything that you said here today. I’m not sure why some people think they can outsmart engineers who have years of experience designing tires.

I’m seriously considering dark siding on my Touring bike, saving money is a good thing but the reason I would do it, is because you get so many more miles out of a car tire. When I go on a long trip the last thing I want to worry about is replacing a wore out Tire.

I’m a new rider and search you-tube for training and tip videos, found a few good Instructors with great videos and training material. I can honestly say that you Kevin is the best of the best. Stupid question I know but is your field guide compatible for PC?

I have a tire pressure monitor system on my Honda Forza 300 maxi-scooter. A Schrader valve is actually quite vulnerable to a little dirt. Plus the rear tire is hard to check. I also have Ride-On tire balancer/sealant in my tires because I ride in the middle of nowhere by myself. My biggest problem is that I have too much fun and wear out a lot of tires.

My experience with a plugged tire is that it held pressure good for about a 1000 miles then it began to loose pressure rapidly, like 20lbs over night. I recommend checking air pressure everyday at least for a week and then once a week or every time before you ride, all tires loose pressure at different rates, some will loose a couple lbs. In a couple days some will only loose a lab. Or 2 in a month.
