ERW is easier to spin up and have better rolling resistance making them very much faster. Also a massive handling advantage spinning a hoop as opposed to riding on a balloon.
I understand that the treads are a part of a tire, so after a while, when they wear out, whole tire needs to be replaced. With all these top of the line materials (e.g. nano tubes) I imagine the costs of a new pair will be pretty high. This will surely make them out of reach for an average consumer?
All other airless tires are double digit less efficient than pneu. We are double digit more efficient than pneu. ERW is significantly faster than pneumatic tires. Rolling the composite hoops keeps you hooked up for the highest speed maneuvers, acceleration and brake force.

What is a drag of such a wheel in Watts when traveling, lets say, at 20 km/h? Can it beat in this respect performance of a traditional, tubbed or tubeless MTB tire?

These early prototypes were over built for sure, some with a half kilo of carbon. Material science of carbon keeps on keeping on. Yeah, i’m a physicist and i haven’t a clue what he’s talking about half the time.
See ultimately it seems that he’s trying to make really hard airless tyres (“Rolling…Not by flattening a tread block”) that give enough to be efficient over rough surfaces but don’t lose energy due to high hysteresis of rubber.
That would produce awful grip problems. Just look at solid metal train wheels spin when it’s wet or icy (they don’t have to give because the rails provide a smooth surface, unlike roads).

The AWD dyno load was so great that the 35.5 psi. pneu. only coasted for 12.2 seconds!! Bicycle was tested at Oxylane Lab in Finland.
